VELIKI POŽAR U PODGORI - LARGE FIRE IN PODGORA
Our school was in great danger during the fire at the night of 14th to 15 October 2011
The fire that broke out in Old Podgora about 22.30h on 14th October, very quickly, carried by the wind, came down the very place of Podgora dangerously threatening homes, gas pump and the building of our school.
Thanks to the great efforts of Mr. Nenad Glučina, our superintendent Daniel Mihaljević and with help of our headmaster Jakov Batinović, school building had been defeated. Minor damage was found on the roof of the school where the flaming pinecone from the surrounding pine trees ignited a few square meters of roof insulation, major damage was hampered by the rapid intervention of Mr. Mihaljević.
Defense of school olive grove was greatly facilitated because our school superintendent and members of the students' cooperative KANATA worked in it last weeks. Specifically, they completely cleaned the olive grove of grass and weeds, and forcefully advancing fire blown with strong wind was stopped just on the western border of our schoolpitch.
Fighting fire with great intensity lasted from 23.30 - 2.45 a.m. After that, the fire power waned, and the wind turned the flame on the other side. Great job to ensure fire was carried out until the morning by professors Miroslav Urlić and Klement Šimić.
This is the opportunity to thank everyone with the hope that an event like this will never happen again.
